PAWS Spring Conference

Elwyn Institute
321 East 11th Street
Wilmington, DE 19801-3422

Information about the conference will be coming from the PAWS office; watch your mailbox & register early. Our mission statement calls us to work toward providing “individualized therapeutic visits,” and we are developing a one-on-one visit program to support that effort.

Our facility contact targets individuals who can benefit greatly from longer, more personalized visits. The facility also defines an objective for our visit – perhaps encouraging an Alzheimer’s elder to come out of her room or helping a disabled person to move more frequently by having them pet the animal more continuously. These are simple objectives, attainable through a visit that may last 15 to 30 minutes.   http://www.pawsforpeople.org/

Mutt Dog: City dweller Mutt Dog is brave, fast, and smart, but he is also hungry and lonely. When he happens upon a shelter for homeless humans, he finds food, companionship, and a shelter employee who takes him home. King's pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations exude a friendly, hopeful feeling, even at the beginning of the story when Mutt is scrounging for food in trash bins and seeking comfort under park benches. By the story's end, Mutt Dog is clean, brushed, well fed, and happy, but his adoptive family has wisely allowed him to remain himself--a mutt. A great choice for story hours.

STEPHEN MICHAEL KING has written and illustrated many books for children, including his award-winning The Man Who Loved Boxes. He lives in Sydney, Australia.

Delaware Seashore State Park  19971

The osprey is the most visible raptor in the Inland Bays region of Delaware. Learn about osprey migration and their schedule of activities during time on the breeding season grounds by joining a Delaware Seashore State Park naturalist. After an indoor presentation, the group will travel by vehicle to some good locations for watching osprey behavior during the spring and summer months in the Park(2825-acre park is a beach-goer's delight).

Like the iconic bald eagle, the ospre suffered a population decline between 1955 and 1980, largely due to pesticides and other pollutants. Environmental cleanup, which started in the 1970s, permitted a resurgent population growth for both the osprey and the bald eagle.

Participants in the "Welcome Back Osprey" program should wear shoes that can get a little muddy and bring binoculars if available. A limited number of binoculars will be available for loan.  The fee for this program is $5,space is limited. Call Indian River Life-Saving Station Museum 302-227-6991 to pre-register.

The Delmarva Birding Weekend

Throughout the Delmarva Peninsula
Delaware and portions of Maryland and Virginia

All weekend!   Celebrate the migration of thousands of warblers, shorebirds, waterfowl, and raptors. More than 400 bird species have been recorded in the region. Over 204 species were tallied during the 2009 event!

The Weekend combines boat trips, paddling treks, and expeditions by foot. (The Delmarva Peninsula is a large peninsula on the East Coast of the United States, occupied by Delaware and portions of Maryland and Virginia. The peninsula is almost 180 by 60 miles, and is bordered by the Chesapeake Bay on the west, and the Delaware River, Delaware Bay, and Atlantic Ocean on the east.)

The Delmarva Peninsula possesses an extensive variety of environments, including barrier islands, tidal wetlands, cypress swamps, upland fields, and primeval forests. Field trips take place in the land and water that feed into the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays, and the Atlantic coastal bays. More than 400 bird species have been recorded in the region.

Participating birders will be helping birds by promoting bird and habitat conservation. Birders, both novice and experienced, can make an important statement about the economic value of birds and their habitats through low-impact tourism. www.delmarvabirdingweekend.org    Call 443-614-0261

Raising animals for meat, dairy, and eggs produces more greenhouse gas emissions than all forms of transportation combined.

The rainforest is being cleared to produce animal feed, while feed cropland and animal waste dump more pollutants into our waterways than all other human activities combined.

Meat-based diets require 10-20 times as much land as plant-based diets and nearly half of the world's grains & soybeans are fed to animals to produce animal products.

What Can You Do?
The good news is that YOU can make a difference at every meal. In addition to your other efforts to protect the environment, reducing (or better yet eliminating) meat, dairy, and eggs in your diet is a powerful tool for real change. Stop by on Thursday the 22nd between 10 & 2 to find out more about the benefits of a vegan diet and get free recipes !

The DELMARVA Search and Rescue Group
Accelerated CERT Class

Prince George's County Fire Services Bldg.

Delmarvasar instructors. Lodging: Not required. When responding to a true emergency, DELMARVA Search and Rescue does not charge for it's services.

We are a volunteer group, and provide our own gear and transportation to all emergency callouts.  Many of the training classes we hold are also done without cost.  In our "business", we'd much prefer people don't get into the situations we're called to get them out of.  So we offer training to the community, as well as other public safety and search groups with the hope that the information will prevent a serious incident one day.

With the generous contributions of people like you, we are able to fund many of our needs, such as radio systems, rescue equipment, training and certification for members and dogs.   DELMARVA stands for Delaware, Maryland, Virginia.

Yard Sale to benefit Underground Dog Rescue

Entrance to New Garden Park

8934 Gap-Newport Pike
Avondale, PA  19311

New Garden Township's spring yard sale is this coming!  UDR will have tables there, as usual.  (We do this in the spring and fall, when the township holds their community yard sales.)

Please stop by and find your next treasure - it's for a great cause!  www.udr.petfinder.com
There are many people participating, so there will be lots of great items to choose from …  The sale is held in front of the township maintenance garage (at the entrance to New Garden Park) on Route 41, near the intersection with Newark Road.  In addition, the Boy Scouts will be having their annual event in the Park at the same time.

Underground Dog Rescue is dedicated exclusively to placing dogs into caring, loving and permanent homes. We rescue shelter dogs just before they are to be destroyed at the shelter due to a lack of space. Our team of volunteers’ temperament tests each one, thereby enabling us to give an accurate evaluation and assessment of each dog’s personality. This approach is what makes our group unique and successful.
