"The Rarest of the Rare"
The Composite Prints of John James Audubon's
Birds of America  Presentation by
Bert Filemyr and Jeff Holt

Ashland Nature Center
3511 Barley Mill Road
Hockessin, DE 19707

Bert and Jeff will explain the story behind Audubon's monumental work "Birds of America" and the special "composite prints". In 1838, as John James Audubon's creation was nearing completion, he requested that his engraver, Robert Havell, produce 13 extra, unique prints.

Havell was instructed to combine images from two or more separate plates into a single print. These special prints are commonly known as a "Composite Prints". Only two full sets, along with a handful of individual prints, of these rare prints exist today and are rarely if ever seen by the public.

Bert and Jeff did extensive research and travel to unlock the story behind these prints. Their work resulted in the publication of a book on this subject which has become a standard reference source for Audubon print scholars. They will provide an overview of Audubon, his work, and the production process to provide background for the discussion and analysis as to how and why these unique plates were made. Illustrations depicting all 13 of the Composite Plates will be shown. Both are long time life members and officers of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC)."  For more info, call   (302) 239 - 2334

In addition, the VSA invites guest speakers to discuss issues related to Vegetarianism and/or the animal rights movement. These speeches are designed to be open to the entire University community and to serve as forums for intellectual discussion of the principles and ethics of Vegetarianism.

Chenoa Manor Animal Sanctuary: The word "Chenoa" is a Native American term meaning "white dove". There could be no more appropriate symbol for the work being done every day at our sanctuary.

Chenoa Manor is a twenty-five acre non-profit animal sanctuary and youth assistance facility in southeastern Pennsylvania's Chester County.  Our focus is on farm animals and exotics - we do not accept domestic animals at our sanctuary.

The animals who call Chenoa Manor home have come to us from a variety of circumstances.  Many arrive at the sanctuary after suffering the abuses of factory farming, others were subjected to cruel and unnecessary lab experiments, or simply abandonded in the wild and left to fend for themselves.

In conjunction with the mission of our animal sanctuary, Chenoa Manor encourages young adults from a variety of backgrounds to experience positive interactions with our animal residents, fostering a mutual sense of compassion and respect toward others.
