The workshop will provide information on Trap-Neuter-Return – the only humane and effective method of managing the population of outdoor cats. With no more kittens, the colony does not grow, and neutering ends behaviors associated with cats, such as yowling and fighting. The cats are vaccinated and fed on a regular schedule – creating a safety net for both the cats and the community.

At the workshop you will:

· View a video about outdoor cats that illustrates humane trapping.
· Learn about outdoor cat care and Trap-Neuter-Return.
· See a humane box trap demonstration.
· Learn how to safely deter cats from where they are not wanted.
· Network and meet other concerned citizens who are helping cats.

~ Children and Animals - Teaching Kindness ~

In the month preceding the Week for the Animals, teachers and students in participating classrooms in Delaware are taking part in a children's Art and Essay contest on the subject of "Buddy Unchained." Through their artwork and writing, kids are asked to have Buddy the Chained Dog explain how he feels being chained outside all alone, and why he wants to come inside and live with the family. Stories may also include Harriet the Cat helping.

The movement to free dogs from a life on a chain is growing rapidly nationwide; it is now well recognized that chaining is not only inhumane to dogs but dangerous to people as well. Many communities and states now have laws limiting, or banning, chaining.

Our art/essay contest is to help bring awareness of this to Delaware's children. The artwork & essays will be displayed at Kent County SPCA in Camden, and 3 winners will be selected from the Art entries and 3 winners from the essay entries. Each of the 6 winning children will be recognized at the "Animal Appreciation Day" Spring Festival and Adoption Fair at Killens Pond State Park on Sunday, April 20th. They will also each be awarded a copy of the wonderful book "Buddy Unchained," from the nationally recognized non-profit organization Dogs Deserve Better, which advocates against chaining. "Buddy Unchained" is the ASPCA Henry Bergh Award Winner in the Companion Animal Category for 2007 and also the HSUS 2007 KIND Children's book Award Winner.

As part of the groundbreaking Delaware Week for the Animals, you are invited to an inspiring and educational evening with Farm Sanctuary President and Co-founder Gene Baur, as he discusses his work and new book, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food. This landmark book has received rave reviews and praise from notables such as Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Dr. Jane Goodall, actress Alicia Silverstone and musical artist Moby among many others.

Gene has more than twenty years of experience in challenging factory farming and working to change how our society views and treats farm animals. He’ll provide first hand accounts of conditions on today’s farms, outline efforts to combat the current inhumane system, and put forward a vision for a healthier and more sustainable food system. He will address how each of us has an opportunity and a responsibility to consume a kinder plate, making a better life for ourselves, animals and all life on the planet.

DELAWARE HUMANE ASSOCIATION'S "5TH ANNUAL WALK FOR THE ANIMALS AT THE BEACH" ~ Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk At Lake Avenue

Saturday April 26th A Kick-Off to the Beach Season

Four-legged friends and their two-legged companions will kick-off the beach season in Delaware Humane Association's (DHA's) Fifth Annual Walk for the Animals at the Beach on Saturday, April 26th. The event will be held on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk at Lake Avenue. Parking is available near the Henlopen Hotel. Registration begins at 11:00 AM and the walk will start at 12:00 noon. The walk is the length of the Boardwalk and back (about 2 miles), and walkers are welcome to bring theirdog(s). Proceeds from the Walk for the Animals at the Beach will benefit DHA and its mission.
